Where to have a Christian wedding in Bali
You have more freedom here than with many ceremonies, which is part of the appeal. There are two lovely paths, and your planner confirms what suits your date.
In a church
Bali has an established Protestant community and real, active churches. The island's main Protestant body is the GKPB, the Gereja Kristen Protestan di Bali, founded in 1931, with congregations across the south such as Dhyana Pura in Kuta, Bukit Doa near Nusa Dua and Kristus Kasih in Denpasar, some with English-speaking services.
Which church can host your wedding depends on the congregation and your paperwork, so the planner confirms it for your date rather than promising a specific church in advance.
Or a setting you choose
Unlike a Catholic wedding, a Protestant blessing does not have to happen inside a church. A minister can lead the service in a glass chapel over the water, in a tropical garden, at a private villa or on the sand, so your ceremony and your view can be one and the same.

Who leads the ceremony: the minister
A minister, called a pendeta in Indonesia, leads the service. An official Protestant minister can conduct the ceremony in English, so you and your guests can follow every word and feel part of it. Your planner arranges a minister who works warmly and respectfully with you, and who will happily weave in the readings, music or personal touches that matter to you.
The blessing service
A Christian blessing in Bali usually follows a familiar shape. It opens with a welcome and hymns, then the reading and preaching of the Word. You speak your vows, and many couples are welcome to add words of their own, before exchanging rings on the left hand.
The minister then pronounces you husband and wife, and you kneel together for the blessing and a prayer over your marriage, before the service closes. It is warm, personal and unhurried, and your planner makes sure it is shaped around you rather than rushed through.
The steps to a Christian wedding
A Protestant wedding is more flexible than a Catholic one, but it still follows a clear path, so it helps to start a few months ahead.
Apply to the church
You submit an application and your documents to the church council, the majelis jemaat, commonly two to three months ahead so the church can prepare. Marrying as a foreign national, you usually also bring a recommendation letter from your home church, addressed to the Protestant synod in Denpasar.
Pre-marriage guidance
Most churches ask couples to attend a short pre-marriage guidance, the bimbingan pranikah, a warm counselling on faith, communication and married life. Some churches run it only in certain months, which can shape your timing, and a few also ask for baptism or membership details. Your planner and the church confirm what applies to you.
The announcement (warta jemaat)
Before the day, the church shares news of your coming marriage with the congregation, usually over two Sundays, so the community can hold you in prayer and raise anything if needed.
The blessing, then registration
The minister leads the pemberkatan and the church issues a blessing certificate. For non-Muslims the legal record is then made at the civil registry, Dukcapil, not the KUA. It is best to register within about two months of the blessing, otherwise the documents need extra legalising, so your planner keeps this moving for you.
Choosing your date
A Protestant wedding has none of the fixed seasonal restrictions of a Catholic one, so it comes down mostly to the church's and minister's availability. Only a few days are usually kept free, when churches hold their own central services.

On these days churches are given over to their major services, and Bali venues are at their busiest, so weddings are rarely scheduled. It is a matter of availability, not a religious ban.

Is a Christian wedding in Bali legal?
It can be a legal marriage, not only a blessing. The church service is the religious ceremony, and it becomes legally recognised once it is recorded with the civil registry, the Dinas Kependudukan dan Pencatatan Sipil, better known as Dukcapil (the short form we will use here), rather than the Kantor Urusan Agama or KUA, and the church certificate feeds that registration.
One honest point worth checking first: if you are marrying as a foreign national, the documents from your own country, such as a Certificate of No Impediment, are yours to arrange directly with your embassy or consulate. Embassies deal only with their own citizens, so a local planner cannot file these on your behalf. We tell you exactly what to obtain and by when, and it is worth understanding how a Bali wedding is recognised back home too.

One last thing if you are not Indonesian. Your marriage is fully legal here in Indonesia, and your marriage certificate is the proof. To have it recognised in your own country, you usually report or register that certificate back home after the wedding, often through your embassy or your country's registry, once it is apostilled and translated.
