Are Bali Weddings Legal in the Netherlands?
The honest answer for Dutch couples, and how to register a Bali marriage back home.

Short version, so you can relax: Yes. A marriage validly performed in Indonesia is generally recognised in the Netherlands, though the certificate is not automatically valid until it is apostilled and translated.
Most couples reading this are a mix: one of you Dutch and the other Indonesian, though it reads the same if you are both Dutch. Being legally married is a separate thing from the ceremony, and it is what matters when the Netherlands has to treat you as a married couple, for a spouse visa, a name change or family paperwork. Here is how it works, in plain terms. Is your Bali marriage recognised in the Netherlands?
Yes. A marriage validly performed in Indonesia is generally recognised in the Netherlands, though the certificate is not automatically valid until it is apostilled and translated. A marriage becomes legal in Indonesia once the religious ceremony is performed and recorded with the civil registry, and your Indonesian marriage certificate is the proof you carry home.
After the wedding: register it, or have it recognised
If you live in the Netherlands, you register the marriage at your municipality, which enters it in the Personal Records Database (BRP). If you live abroad, you can register it with the Registry in The Hague, which can then issue Dutch certificates. Registration is not compulsory but is recommended, so you never have to re-legalise the Indonesian document later.
Apostille and translation
Both countries are in the Apostille Convention, so your certificate needs an Indonesian apostille plus a sworn translation into Dutch, English, French or German. An apostille is a standard international certification of a public document, and since Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention in 2022 its authorities can issue one on your marriage certificate.
