Are Bali Weddings Legal in Germany?
The honest answer for German couples: recognised automatically, with optional registration.

Short version, so you can relax: Yes. A marriage validly concluded in Indonesia is generally recognised in Germany automatically, with no re-registration needed for it to be valid.
Most couples reading this are a mix: one of you German and the other Indonesian, though it reads the same if you are both German. Being legally married is a separate thing from the ceremony, and it is what matters when Germany has to treat you as a married couple, for a spouse visa, a name change or family paperwork. Here is how it works, in plain terms. Is your Bali marriage recognised in Germany?
Yes. A marriage validly concluded in Indonesia is generally recognised in Germany automatically, with no re-registration needed for it to be valid. A marriage becomes legal in Indonesia once the religious ceremony is performed and recorded with the civil registry, and your Indonesian marriage certificate is the proof you carry home.
After the wedding: recognised automatically, registration optional
You do not have to register it. German citizens may optionally have it entered in the German marriage register (Nachbeurkundung) at the Standesamt, which then issues a German marriage certificate that is useful for later name changes or family matters. Where neither spouse has lived in Germany, this runs through Standesamt I in Berlin, which can have long waiting times.
Apostille and translation
Germany and Indonesia are both in the Apostille Convention, so your certificate needs an Indonesian apostille and a certified German translation by a sworn (vereidigter) translator. An apostille is a standard international certification of a public document, and since Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention in 2022 its authorities can issue one on your marriage certificate.
