Are Bali Weddings Legal in China?
The honest answer for Chinese couples: recognised at home, with no re-registration.

Short version, so you can relax: Yes. China generally treats a marriage as valid where it was lawfully performed, so a Bali marriage is recognised without a domestic re-registration.
Most couples reading this are a mix: one of you Chinese and the other Indonesian, though it reads the same if you are both Chinese. Being legally married is a separate thing from the ceremony, and it is what matters when China has to treat you as a married couple, for a spouse visa, a name change or family paperwork. Here is how it works, in plain terms. Is your Bali marriage recognised in China?
Yes. China generally treats a marriage as valid where it was lawfully performed, so a Bali marriage is recognised without a domestic re-registration. A marriage becomes legal in Indonesia once the religious ceremony is performed and recorded with the civil registry, and your Indonesian marriage certificate is the proof you carry home.
After the wedding: recognised automatically
There is no civil-affairs re-registration for a marriage already made abroad. To use the certificate officially in China, you have it apostilled and translated; a Chinese citizen abroad can arrange document handling through a Chinese embassy or consulate.
Apostille and translation
China joined the Apostille Convention in November 2023, so your certificate now takes an Indonesian apostille rather than the old embassy legalisation, plus a certified Chinese translation. Acceptance is not automatic, so ask the receiving authority what it needs in advance. An apostille is a standard international certification of a public document, and since Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention in 2022 its authorities can issue one on your marriage certificate.
