Are Bali Weddings Legal in Belgium?

Being legally married is a separate thing from the ceremony, and it is what matters when Belgium has to treat you as a married couple, for a spouse visa, a name change or family paperwork. Is your Bali marriage recognised in Belgium?

Yes. Belgium recognises a marriage validly performed in Indonesia, and it is transcribed into the Belgian civil-status records by your commune. A marriage becomes legal in Indonesia once the religious ceremony is performed and recorded with the civil registry, and your Indonesian marriage certificate is the proof you carry home.

After the wedding: transcribe it at your commune

Your municipality of registration transcribes the Indonesian certificate into the central register (DABS/BAEC). Transcription is free and is what lets you obtain Belgian copies of the marriage act, so it is worth doing even though the marriage is already valid.

Apostille and translation

Both countries are in the Apostille Convention, so your certificate needs an Indonesian apostille and a sworn translation into Dutch, French or German. Whether a translation made in Indonesia is accepted, or must be redone in Belgium, depends on your commune. An apostille is a standard international certification of a public document, and since Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention in 2022 its authorities can issue one on your marriage certificate.
